GRAEME THOMWith over 40 years of service in the Queensland Fire & Emergency Services, this retired fire commander has faced it all—he’s been shot at, spat on, and even accused of corruption, all while risking his life to protect others. His journey has taken him over cliffs, through burning floors, and into countless fires, including some of the most intense bushfires Queensland and other regions have seen.
Rising through the ranks, he has operated in prominent roles such as Brisbane City Fire Commander, Regional Assistant Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner of Safety & Risk Management, and Director of Operational Performance Improvement.
His expertise has led him to chair National Fire Safety Committees, represent Australian fire services internationally, and earn prestigious awards, including the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) for leadership, the Australian Fire Protection Medal and the Australian Centenary Medal for community service.

Graeme Thom was recognised and awarded the highest recognition of a firefighter, the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) for his distinguished and exceptional service, commitment, leadership, and performance in roles that have enhanced the safety of Queenslanders, their community and the effectiveness of the Queensland fire service. I highly recommend the read and the lessons to be learnt.
The awarding of the ACM to Graeme Thom recognises his leadership contribution to the Australian society and government, marking the 100th anniversary of the Federation of Australia. It acknowledges his noteworthy contribution to the nation and to his community. This award also recognises not only his knowledge and wisdom but his ability to pass this on to others. Well worth the read.
Graeme Thom has been awarded one of the Fire Protection Associations of Australia’s highest honours in the Fire Protection Industry, recognising outstanding contributions to the industry and the community safety of Australia.
Mr Thom, I awoke this morning to hear ABC Radio National reporting that 17 people had safely escaped from a boarding house fire in Brisbane. The news report shows me proof that our effort has been validated and that our passion has been vindicated.
